4th Quarter Reading Book Review

A Lion’s Tale by Chris Jericho. Grand Central Publishing, 2008. Genre: Autobiographical Novel
A Lion’s Tail, is Chris Jericho writing about his life. Chris is known best for being a WWE superstar and as the lead singer in the heavy metal band, Fozzy. Chris starts of as a little kid growing up in Winnipeg, and his grandma getting him into wrestling. Ever since then, he knew that he would grow up to be a pro wrestler. He trained in the infamous Hart Dungeon in Canada..While in Canada, he worked in many school gyms and bars. He also worked in Mexico, Germany and Japan. He spent a lot of time in local tents, clubs and famous halls. Finally, he ended up in the US working with the WCW and the WWE. Chris had many crazy adventures before making it into the big times and becoming the first Undisputed Champion.
"Funny, insightful, and compulsively readable ... His hilarious and detailed descriptions of his many bouts, especially his 1995 ‘calling card’ in Japan ... will leave readers hoping for a sequel."-Publishers Weekly
Chris Jericho writing style is so easy to read. He uses such vivid descriptions, even thought they are about the smallest things from 30 years ago. His writing is funny and provocative, which for me makes it fun to read. It doesn’t remind me of any other book I’ve read, because I’ve never read a book like this. The only book I can compare it to is Enders Game, because they are the only books I have read that I’ve liked recently (last 10 years). I don’t really find books that I like, which is a big reason why I don’t really like to read. But, this book is an exception. I really enjoyed this book.
"He was right, and whenever I tried out a new catchphrase, if it appeared on a sign over the next few shows, (like Ayatollah of Rock N Rolla) I knew I had a winner."( 446).
I am a fan of Chris Jericho and I loved the way he wrote this book. He wrote in a way that seemed very unique to me. Since he’s not a writer, his writing style is raw and simple. Now that I know more about Chris Jericho, I feel he is more than just a famous wrestler. I loved the way he talked about his memories, good or bad. Chris Jericho has a New York Times Bestseller here, and a great book.

Fair Lady

My Fair lady I give you my good-bye,
I must take off on my trusty steed
so away fair Lady, now I must fly
to do my noble and chivalrous deed

I shall miss your beautiful golden locks
but I fight for the bigger, larger cause
go back to the kitchen, put on thy frocks
I will protect you from the dragon's jaws.

The dragon has burned and killed many lands
and the king has called upon us to defend
so please dear maiden take off thy hands
goodbye for now my love, this war must end.

I went into battle later that day
but I was too scared so I ran away...

Old Man and the Sea Essay

In life, there is always an action, and a reaction. For every choice, there is a consequence. Without knowing, a choice that is made without no thought at all, can change someone’s life forever. In the book, The Old Man and the Sea, and just like everyone else, the old man makes choices and then must live with them. He decided to become a fisherman. He decided to continue to chase the marlin. He decided also that there was nothing he could do to stop the sharks. The old man went through a lot in those couple of days, things that effected the rest of his life. Every decision, every action, every thought, effected his life forever more.

"A man is never lost at sea..." Page 89
The old man decided to spend his life fishing, which he loves. But because of that, he has gone broke. He has no money, he hasn’t caught a fish in months, and he has no one except for the boy. He has no family, every fish that he does catch, he has to eat because he has no food. He lives in a shack by himself. Hes never pessimistic though. His life stlye might be concidered gloomy to one, but his optimistic life style is fine with him.

"Fish, I love you and respect you very much. But I will kill you dead before this day ends." Page 54
The old man decided to stay and try to catch the marlin. It took him into the middle of the ocean. He hurt himself and almost starved to death in the process. But, he did catch three fish, one of which was the marlin. As a matter-of-fact, it was giant. He was so cautious not to let it go, and now he didn’t know how to kill it. He was still confident that he could slay the haunting beast. After all that time waiting for the marlin to show its self, he wasn’t going to just stop and lye over dead. He wanted this so bad that he couldn’t stop.

"I think the great DiMaggio would be proud of me today." Page 97
The old man finally caught the marlin. Then the sharks came and ate his prized marlin. All of his hard work was wasted. After waiting over 3 days out in the ocean, it was worthless. But, when he arrived to shore and showed everyone the skeleton of the marlin, he became a fishing hero. This is ironic because before, he was considered a lonely, old man who couldn’t catch a fish for his life. Now, he was a legend, and his story would be passed down, generation to generation, listening to the story that took place so long ago, when The old man in the sea that caught the sea monster with the sword for a nose! People would tell there kids and people will look back and wonder if it is truth or myth.

In conclusion, the old man made choices and then hade to live with them. He made the decision to become a fisherman. He decided to sail in Cuba. He decided to Stay with the marlin for so long. He also decided to try to bring the eerie beast home. Like always, he made decisions and it effected the rest of his life. Just like everyone does the exact same. Now with these changes for better or worst, he would have to live the rest of his life with these changes, small or large. In life, every choice is an action, and every action has a reaction.

OPERATION: AVIATOR

Screams in the streets, cries of terror, I ran to my parents. There was a man in a uniform beating my mother and my dad had been beaten to the floor. I saw him ask my dad where I was. He said he didn’t have any children. The man chained them and took them away. I sat there hiding. I saw the whole thing but I didn’t do anything. From that moment, I told my self that it wouldn’t happen again.

Two years later

The streets are now empty. There are only a handful of us left. I am a survivor. Their men guard the streets. Eating scraps of garbage, all alone. No way for a 15 year old to be living. Actually, I wish I was dead. The only thing that keeps me alive is them. I will save them, even if I die trying, I will safe them.

It was getting dark and I got my materials ready. For tonight was the two year jubilee and tonight the attack begins. Every moment since they have taken them, I have been planning it, Operation Aviator.

“Bong,” The night bell rang at the camp. After two years of searching for the camp my parents were brought to, it was all falling to plan. I sat in a tree 25 feet from the camp. I went to the top of the tree which was around 30 feet higher then the barbed gate. I went into my bag and took out a sheet. It was tied to my back by a couple of ropes. I threw the sheet in the air and jumped. The sheet picked up enough air resistance just to get me over the fence.

I was in. No one had noticed me yet. So, I headed to the first building I saw after landing. I found the lowest window, checked if it was clear and jumped in. If my plan was correct, I was in a guard tower. Which meant, at the top there would be two guards sitting keeping a watch over everything. A perfect place to get a better look at everything. I got to the top and it was just as I thought. Two guards were sitting, keeping a lookout. I went in my bag and took out a rock. I chucked it down the stair-well makeing a clamor.

“What was that?” the fat guard asked begining to hyperventilate.
“I don’t know. Probably a rat. Go take care of it. I wouldn’t want the slaves to get
an extra meal, hahaha!” The tall guard laughed.

I took out my knife and as the fat guard approached me, I flew out and stabbed him right in the throat. His chest was too big to get a clean shot at his heart. Then, I quietly snuck in the guard room and slit the tall guard’s throat, quiet and fast.he droped to the floor in acute pain.

The holding cell, where the captives where held, was in the building next to me in the basement. The doors of the building where impossible to enter. So, I would have to get in from the roof. I looked in my bag and grabbed my grappling hook. I threw it across to the roof of the building. It hooked on a brick, so I tied the other side to the post. I held on and inched myself across. When I made it across, I cut the rope so no one saw it. But, I took the hook with me. I made my way to the basement, having to kill a total of six guards. I approached the cell. When I saw them, they looked different, though. They wore a bag. They were gaunt and looked so feeble.

“Mother, Father?” I questioned.
“Huuh, Jacob, is that you?” My father asked.
“Yes Father, it's me, Jacob.” I said.
“No, they captured you!” My mother cried.
“Not yet mother, I'm breaking you out!”

I took the hook and smashed the lock. I opened the cage and all the captives ran as fast as their fragile bodies could run. I took my parents and followed the bevy. As we made it to the ground level, affluent guards at the exit door started to shoot. I took the hook and threw it like a gaff at the lock of the door. It smashed and the captives pushed everyone out the door. The rest of the guards in the camp were now aware of the situation and were attacking back. They began to anulle the captives. But the stampede of captive’s rammed through the gate, to finally be emancipated from this place. I looked at my parents.

“Go ahead, I will be back.” I said.
“No, I didn’t let them take you the first time and not this time either!” My father demanded benevolently.
“I must do this.”I said back.

I ran back into the camp, around the carnage of dead guards and captives. I kicked open a locked cellar door, to revel a small bunker that I became aware of one night. I got this information from a guard that I was threatening to kill if he didn’t tell me information. I was looking for info on the location of my parents, but this seemed just as useful.

“Fine, fine, I will talk! Ok, so in every camp, there are secret underground bunkers that only the head in-command knows. In the bunker, there is a bomb, in case the camp is no longer need.”

I ran down and hit the switch. A beeping noise began, as I ran out as fast ask I could.

BOOM

It was over. The guards retired from the streets. The camp was no more. People lived in the town in peace. I was back with my family. Operation Aviator, success.

First Quarter Reading Book Review

Sleeper Code by Tom Sniegoski. Razor Bill, 2006 Genre: Science-Fiction
In the book, Sleeper Code, the main character Tom Lovett is a sixteen year old boy who suffers from Quentin’s narcolepsy. Quentin’s narcolepsy is a rare case of narcolepsy that makes you fall asleep for days at a time at random. He is home schooled because his parents are real strict with everything about him. He didn’t have any friends, except his neighbor’s niece, Madison, who was visiting for the summer. Tom really liked her. They talked spent a lot of time talking to each other and then Tom invited her over for dinner. After dinner, Tom had a narcolepsy attack. Later that night, Madison looked out her window and saw Tom in a black suit getting into a black van. So, she went to Tom’s house and knocked on their door. Tom’s Dad opened the door asking her what she wanted. She asked about what she saw. Tom’s dad smiled and said that Tom was asleep. She could tell he was lying but walked away. Tom woke up in someone’s motel room and his head hurt him. There was a man with a gun pointed at him. The man told him that Tom was apart of the Janus project. The project was taking kids who suffered from Quentin’s narcolepsy and implanting a chip in their head which gave them an alter ego, an assassin of an ego. These kids were supposed to be the perfect killer, a weapon. He said that Tom was sent here to kill him. Tom then finds out that his life is a lie and that even his parents are agents assigned to make sure he knows nothing. He and Madison try to run from the evil spies that are trying to track him down. This is the fight of Tom’s life.

“Sleeper code is Tom Sniegoski’s best, thrilling, rollercoaster of a book.”
- A Fan

Sleeper Code is a fantasy story that has more of the narrator speaking than dialog. The moral of the story is to be careful who you trust. Tom finds out that his parents are really not his parents after all. Tom is a regular kid in the ways that he likes girls, does school work, even though he’s home schooled, and lives in a regular home. Then he finds out something that changes everything.

“Brandon Kavanagh stepped over the body of the dead Pandora Group operative on his way out of his office.” (273).

I am a fan of Tom Sniegoski novel Sleeper Code. His book was very interesting and exciting. I never wanted to put the book down. The suspense that the author created made my eyes glue to each page. I had a great time reading it.

How much does Value cost?

People work everyday, for one sole reason, to get paid. People work so hard so at the end of the day so they have a little “spending money”. Many people waste the hard worked money on useless things that they don’t need. They are obsessed in showing off these expensive, but useless objects. From Hummers to golden toilet seats, 300inch plasma screens to golden teeth. People don’t understand value.

Wait for it to hit seven o’clock… wait for it…wait for it…………..GO! I get up, run down the stairs to see the most beautiful thing in the world, a lighten tree with multiple wrapped boxes underneath its pedestal. If you haven’t figured it out, it is Christmas morning at my house on a snowy December 25th morning. With a half eaten cookie and a hot co-co mug empty, I run to get my parent conscious. As I make the sprint to their room, I overheard them groveling to “it’s not 7 o’clock”. Wake up, wake up! It is time to open presents! They slump out of bead awkwardly and drag themselves to the living room where the spectacle was about to appear.

As I wait for my parents to make the usual cup of Joe, I empty out my stocking at the same time as my little brother Riley. We yell out the things we got. Gum, Yo-yo, paddle ball, candy cane, and as many things that could fit is that oversized sock. But that was just the beginning. As my parents take a seat, my mother fills her obsession of video-taping everything that seems important in my childhood. Riley and I grab a present one by one, and open it up, yell what it is, then to fill my mother’s needs we smile and hold up each gift to the camera. My father laughs at what my mother makes us do for the camera, still half asleep himself. We open another and another, picking one, and waiting for my mom to approve, she always want us to open the best for last. As the number of presents slims by the millisecond, we lay our eyes on the mother load. We look as my mother shakes her head in approval, and we count down, 3, 2, 1, GO! We tear every last millimeter from the box. We then jump up and down in excitement. As we then sit to play with each and every gift. It’s priceless.

As the logo lights up and I see the bright white screen, the blue selection bar scrolls away. I select the playlist, picking the song that fits the mood. Crank up the volume, it’s the best thing in the world. I love my iPod. I have a 5th generation iPod video. I snarl when I people show off their new iPods. I like mine even though it’s not the newest. I got my iPod for Christmas of 2006. It was an amazing surprise. I have all of my favorite songs on it. I have podcasts which I love because they’re free! Because I have an iPod video, I can play TV shows and movies and of course video podcasts! I bring it with me everywhere, except for school (I follow school rules, don’t worry). I listen to it when I’m bored, when I feel a craving for music, or when I’m going out. It’s like having a personal jukebox. I have all my media at the touch of my finger. I have freedom to control my personal sound wave. An iPod is a music evolution. Apple has revolutionized the way we listen to music. Forget the CD players and welcome to the 21st century of the iPod.

I enjoy both very much. They are very different with similarities, the oxymoron of my life. While I would never want to give up my Christmas morning, my iPod is my mental escape to my music. There is an overlay; I got my iPod on Christmas morning. It would be tough to give up one or the other. They are the things in my life that are important to me and that are what makes me happy. So in a world where the word “priceless” is thrown around so much, I can say that my two things are priceless to me.
